The U.S. Federal Drug Administration has regulations that mandate every prescription, (Rx) narcotic, over-the-counter, (OTC), veterinary and an ever growing number of capsules, tablets and softgels in these categories are required to be marked or have an emboss from which an identification can be made.
Even though the FDA mandated that these solid dosage forms bear an imprint, no rules or guidelines were made to more readily catalog these imprints or search for specific imprints.
Our mission was to create a pill identification database that solved the deficiencies of the current state of the art. Three primary problems observed were that;
1. All the information in many imprints is not collected. With other databases, logo form graphics are not cataloged, used in the search or presented as a confirmation that you have the correct drug.
2. Due to a large amount of duplicate imprints when logo graphics are omitted, the more inclusive the database, the more possible false positives are presented. To alleviate this problem, many competitive databases drop older or less popular imprints from their databases.
3. Having to choose from a list of possible solutions rather than getting a definitive answer. Only PillID.Com uses a patented process to use logo graphics both in the pill search and results, giving a more definitive identification no matter the depth of the database.

PillID.Com and it's patented database was first conceived by a pharmacist and a technologist who were looking for a better way to catalog imprints that were used in conjunction with a pharmaceutical information service that was provided by phone. Originally unknown imprints were kept on index cards and later migrated to a computer database.
